Weekend Harvest

We kept busy over the weekend, and had a lot to eat and preserve. The first round of summer veggies is coming in and it's looking to be good year for us. I can't wait to get the reclaimed space planted from last of the winter crops, many of which came up this weekend.

You can click the link below to read the post replete with images, but for summaries' sake, we harvested two types of eggplant, several types of pepper, six or so garlic varieties, and a whole lot of greenbeens. No tomatoes just yet but they are on their way.

The garlic was finally ready to come up this weekend. Clockwise from right corner we have: Chet's Italian Red, Red Torch, Applegate, Bulk from the grocery store, Inchelum Red, Susanville, and Elephant Garlic in the center. The Nootka Roses still have a week or so to come up. Total bed space, 4ft x5ft.
The elephant garlic gave us some corms. We will have a lot of elephant garlic next year.
We have Casper and some long purple variety of eggplant growing right now. The Caspers have a strong mushroom flavor and are nice fried. The purples are not ideal for our hot season and won't be sticking around much longer. We have several other varieties sprouting right now to replace them; more on that later.

Since we run our beds year 'round if they get the sun, we have to add lots of nitrogen and other ammendments to keep them going, even then, they will have to get a rest sometime. But one way to add nitrogen is to grow beans, and grow they do. So far we collect from one 2ft x4ft area planted with three or four plants and we get enough for a side of greenbeans every other day or so. We have more coming up beside this spot so we should be eating greenbeans from the garden daily soon.

Just a quick shot of most of the backyard garden. Some tomatoes and eggplants are behind me in the shot. Most of the yard has been turned into useful, productive space.

As always, comments welcome and have a great Day.
